Why Ride the Ha Giang Loop in 2026

The Loop is a rough circle of mountain road through Vietnam's far north, on the Chinese border. Most of it crosses the Dong Van Karst Plateau, Vietnam's first UNESCO Global Geopark: grey limestone teeth, deep gorges and villages where H'mong, Tay, Dao and Lo Lo families grow corn between the rocks.

The classic route runs Ha Giang city, Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, Ma Pi Leng and Meo Vac, with Du Gia as the quiet detour we love most. The tarmac has improved, but rain, fog, trucks and long drops have not gone anywhere.

Scenic Highlights on the Loop

Quan Ba Heaven Gate

An hour out of the city, after the hairpins of Bac Sum Pass, the road tops out at Heaven Gate above the Twin Fairy Mountains, two rounded hills in a patchwork of rice.

Yen Minh Pine Forest

Past Can Ty the air cools and the road runs under tall pines, the one stretch of the Loop that smells like a European hillside.

Dong Van Old Quarter

Stone and timber houses about a century old, in a style borrowed from across the border. The Sunday market fills the lanes with H'mong, Lo Lo and Dao dress; our groups sleep here with a H'mong family.

Ma Pi Leng Pass

Roughly twenty kilometres of road cut into a cliff, with the jade-green Nho Que River several hundred metres straight down. Built largely by hand in the early 1960s, it is still called the Happiness Road.

Du Gia

South of Meo Vac the plateau softens into terraces, rivers and Tay stilt houses. We swim under A Boong waterfall and raft the Hangtham Lin River with local fishermen. Everyone finally slows down.

Riding Safely on the Ha Giang Loop in 2026

The road decides the pace, not the schedule. Rain on limestone is slippery and fog arrives in minutes, so check the forecast and know your limits. Every rider gets a helmet, protective gear and a raincoat, and our guides know which stretches flood. Never ride after rice wine.

Want to ride yourself? Police on the Loop check for an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 convention, category A or A1, plus your national licence. No valid IDP means no self-riding, which is exactly why Easy Rider exists: you sit behind an experienced local driver and simply enjoy the road.

Leaving the Plateau as You Found It

We have no grand green programme, just small daily habits: sleep and eat in family homestays so the money stays in the village, buy hemp cloth in Lung Tam from the women who weave it, carry our rubbish down the mountain, and ask before photographing anyone. Travel as a guest, not a spectator.

Yes, as an Easy Rider. This is not the place to learn to ride; sit behind a driver and you get the same road without the stress.

How many days do I need?

Three days is the sweet spot: Du Gia, Ma Pi Leng and Dong Van without rushing. Four days adds Lung Cu; two days works if you are short on time.

When is the best season?

March to May for blossom and green rice, September to November for golden terraces and buckwheat flowers. Summer is hot and wet with landslides; December and January are cold and foggy.
